Many homeowners may not give any thought to replacing their old thermostats or have any idea when they should decide to do so. If your thermostat is outdated or doesn’t appear to function correctly you should ask our technicians to inspect it this fall. This is especially true when we come to your home to conduct our annual fall maintenance. If you’re thinking about upgrading your thermostat with a newer one the right time to do it would be now before your system is switching between heating and cooling throughout the day. A correctly functioning thermostat will allow it to switch from heating to cooling on its own to give you the control that you deserve.
With the Fall months here already, you know the drill with the thermostat settings throughout the day. Heat in the mornings, air in the afternoons, and then heat once again. Almost like a rollercoaster of temperatures throughout the day. The constant switch between the two settings can negatively affect your thermostat if it is not an upgraded system that can perform the temperature switch on its own. Although, manually switching from heating to cooling will not damage your system, it can still put stress on your system and can lead to bigger issues down the road.
With an updated system you don’t have to worry about your system’s compressor as it makes the switch from heating to cooling or vice versa. Newer systems have an automatic five minute delay time when making the switch so that you do not have to worry about that problem happening. On the other hand, if you still have a system that requires you to make the temperature switch manually then you should allow the cycle to completely run before switching, turn the system off completely for at least five-minutes, and then turn the system on to the other cycle.
Another thing that can put stress on your system and lead to more problems in the future is running your air conditioner when it is too cold outside or running your heater when it is too warm outside. You should never run your air conditioner when the temperature outside is anything below 55 degrees and you should never run your heater when the temperature outside is above 85 degrees. If you notice your system locking up you should call a technician immediately and ensure that you turn your system off. If you live in San Antonio, be sure to contact Mr. Wilson Heating & Air Conditioning if you experience a locked-up compressor.
To prevent any damages from happening you should have your machine serviced regularly and especially before the winter months. It is ideal to schedule a service check before the stress of switching from cooling to heating takes a toll on your system. Also, it’s a good idea to upgrade your thermostat during the fall maintenance if you have not already done so. Don’t put off your regular maintenance and give us a call anytime Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM or Saturday through Sunday from 9 AM to 6 PM at (210) 308-9866 to schedule a routine maintenance check.
If you are still not sure whether or not you should replace your thermostat here are a few more reasons why you should do so…
You should be replacing your thermostat every time you replace your air conditioner or heater. This will ensure that the systems are up to date and are working properly with each other. If you continue using an outdated thermostat the efficiency of it will decrease and it will not run as accurately as it once did. Replacing your thermostat is a good way to make sure that any lost efficiency from using your old thermostat is remedied before it starts to have serious negative effects on your home.
